Benefits and Problems With Rockstar Energy Drinks – Caffeine Energy Drinks Teenagers Consume Daily

caffeine

Global caffeine energy drinks are a $57 billion dollar industry in the United States and are expected to grow faster than the coffee industry.

Energy drinks target the young and adventurous with a flair for the dramatic. These drinks are bright, colorful, and potentially dangerous.

With high levels of caffeine, sugar and audience that likes to also consume alcohol, these take the term “mixed drinks” to dangerous levels.

Virtually every medical study undertaken will say that mixing energy drinks and alcohol is dangerous. The impact can vary from inducing medical emergencies, to more hours drinking. The general concensus being this represent an emerging threat to public health. .

But the kids love it. And just saying it is bad won’t stop this train rolling downhill. A search of the internet will come up with endless recipes on how to mix alcohol and energy drinks.

What’s in there that all the fuss is about:

Caffeine: Caffeine is everywhere. Coffee, soda, tea. But there is a lot of it in energy drinks. A can of soda usually has between 35mg and 50 mg of caffeine. A cup of coffee has 90mg. A Rockstar as 160 mg of caffeine in every serving.

Milk Thistle: It’s unclear what the purpose of this is. It is generally used as a supplement to support the liver. But some people use it as a hangover cure or for depression. I think the point here would be if you don’t know what it does, why are you consuming it?

Super High Sugar Content: There are actually 140 calories and 31 grams of sugar in a single can of Rockstar Energy Drinks. To put that in perspective, there is approximately 4gr of sugar per teaspoon. So you are getting almost 8 teaspoons of sugar per serving. The same amount of sugar you would get in 5 Oreos.

Ginseng and Ginkgo: These are both herbs known for their stimulation properties. These are generally considered safe but are known to cause stomach upset with some consumers.

Guarana: Another stimulating agent. This has recently gained popularity in weight loss pills but is considered unsafe in large amounts. Side effects can include nausea, headache, seizures, irregular heart rhythms, and anxiety. It should never be taken with aspirin because it can possibly boost the chance of bleeding.

Synthetic Compounds: Numerous

In fact, in 2018 the FDA took steps to protect consumers against dietary supplements contain pure or highly concentrated caffeine in powder or liquid forms because of the potential for consumer abuse. While they stopped short of regulating energy drinks they did provide guidelines for safe use with more than 400mg a day being considered unsafe.

There was even a 21-year-old man who drank 4 energy day who was hospitalized in 2021 for heart and kidney failure. He drank 4 energy drinks a day.

Because of the high caffeine and sugar content, Rockstar is simply not safe to ingest big quantities of. In case you have any of these conditions- diabetes, heart disease, obesity, or hypertension, this drink is actually an exceptionally poor option for you. Overall, name-brand energy drinks including Rockstar are not a healthy way of obtaining energy.
